Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Stevenson women's ice hockey sophomores Jessie Capanelli and McKenzie Taggart both scored power-play goals, but four consecutive goals and three in the second period by the Blazers led St. Benedict to a 4-2 victory over the Mustangs Saturday at Dave Torrey Arena.
Today's game was a homecoming for head coach Tracy Johnson who grew up and played high school hockey just an hour from St. Cloud. Johnson was a two-year captain and help lead Benilde-St. Margaret's High School to the 2004 State Championship.
The Mustangs (3-4-1) rank 11th in Division III with a 21.6 power-play percentage. They are 11-of-51 of the year and have scored a power-play goal in every game but one this year. Against Franklin Pierce on November 22, sophomore Katie Abbott scored a short-handed goal.
Capanelli scored her second power-play goal of the year just 2:42 into the game to give Stevenson an early 1-0 lead.
Stevenson held its one goal advantage for an entire period before giving up three second period goals, including one on the power-play, to give the host Blazers a 3-1 lead at the second intermission.
An opening third period power-play goal by team leading scorer Stephanie Kirk gave St. Benedict a three goal advantage 1:44 into the period.
The Mustangs lead Division III with 22.5 penalty minutes per game and have given up five power-play goals in the last three games. The team however ranks in the top-20 with a 92.9 penalty kill percentage.
Stevenson finished 2-for-5 on the power-play while St. Benedict (1-5-0) went 2-for-8.
Taggart notched her team-leading eighth goal at the 16:53 mark of the third period on a deflection from sophomore Brooke Webber.
Sophomore Anastassia Nelson finished with a career-high 34 saves.
Stevenson was outshot 38-19, including 12-4 in the third period while the Blazers won 49-of-67 faceoffs.
The Mustangs wrap-up a two game set against the Blazers on Sunday beginning at 3:00 p.m. EST.
