Panian Scores Team-Leading Seventh as Mustangs Hold Off Widener

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's soccer team fought through an early injury to fend off conference opponent Widener, winning 3-2 on a chilly night at Mustang Stadium. The Mustangs remain unbeaten in conference play after a 1-0 win on Saturday versus Lycoming in the conference opener.

Eight minutes into the first half, Widener scored on a Stevenson own goal after a throw in attempt into the box.

On the same play, junior goalkeeper Pat Carey (Brooklyn Park, Md./North County) made a dive for the ball toward the left side and had to be taken out of the game after hitting his head on the post.

The Mustangs (7-5-1, 2-0-0 MAC) got on the board in the 24th minute as junior Yianni Sarioglou (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) scored on a free kick from 20 yards out on the left side, clearing it by the Widener defense and past senior goalie Jakub Valdner just inside th post.

Less than two minutes later, senior Steve Hamilton (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) gave Stevenson the lead on a goal from the middle of the box, assisted by senior Nico Garcia (Silver Spring, Md./Blake).

The second half brought early scoring as well, as Widener (5-5-2, 0-1-1 MAC) tied the game in the 54th minute off of a corner kick as senior Matt Montera scored his first goal of the season for the Pride.

Just over a minute later, senior Christopher Panian (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) scored the game winning goal for Stevenson after dribbling past two defenders at the top of the box, his team leading seventh goal in 2013, capping off a 3-2 victory.

Two yellow cards were issued to the Mustangs in the game, one to freshman Adnan Alic (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) and the other to Sarioglou.  Sarioglou and Panian each had four shots in the game, totaling eight of the Mustangs' 11.

Sophomore Ryan Callinan (Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph's) made three saves over the final 82 minutes in goal to earn his second win of the season.

The Mustangs take to the road this weekend at Arcadia on Saturday.  The team's next home game is Wednesday, October 18 against Lebanon Valley beginning at 7:00 p.m.
