Box Score OSWEGO, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey freshman Rachel Martell (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead High School) scored her second goal of the season on the power play to tie the game at 1-1 at the end of the first period, but SUNY Oswego netted the game's final four en route to a 5-1 victory Saturday at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
The Mustangs (5-9-1) lost for the first time in their last four road contests dating back to a 2-1 defeat at UMass-Boston on January 3. The teams' two wins at SUNY Canton on January 9 and January 10 were exhibitions.
Freshman Mackenzie Bruch (Hiram, Ga./Boston Shamrocks) tied a career-high with 36 saves as Stevenson was outshot 41-18, including 34-13 over the final two periods. She also had 36 saves at UMass-Boston.
Melissa Seamont gave the Lakers (10-8-1) an early lead when she scored on a wrist shot from the blue line at the 4:25 mark of the first period.
Martell then tied the game at 16:14 on a slap shot from the top of the zone with the man advantage that beat SUNY Oswego netminder Bridget Smith who was screened in front. Freshman Karly Vis (Murillo, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) picked up her third assist of the season on the play as the Mustangs converted its second-straight power play opportunity.
Stevenson is 2-for-4 on the power play over its last two games was 1-for-3 on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Mustangs killed off four of the Lakers' five power play opportunities.
With the game tied at 1-1 at the start of the second period, SUNY Oswego would take the lead for good just 46 seconds in when Olivia Boersen scored the first of her two goals after skating end-to-end and lifting a shot over Bruch's left shoulder from between the circles.
Emma Smetaniuk gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead at 13:34 before Boersen and Lizzy Marks each added third period tallies.
Boersen finished with two goals for the Lakers while Smetaniuk added a goal and two assists. Smith was credited with 17 saves.
Stevenson and SUNY Oswego conclude their two-game series on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
