Trio Leads Mustangs to Third-Straight Victory, 3-1 Over Bridgewater (Va.)

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Stevenson women's soccer trio of junior Jamie Matlock (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland) and freshmen Ashlyn Hawbaker (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) and Allison Johnson (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) combined to lead the Mustangs to their third-straight victory, 3-1 over Bridgewater (Va.) Saturday at the Greensboro Tournament hosted by Greensboro College.

Stevenson (3-0) has posted wins in its first three games for the first time in school history. The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 9-2 so far this season.

After a nearly two-hour weather delay, Hawbaker gave Stevenson a 1-0 lead with her first career goal in the 31st minute.

However, the Eagles (3-2) would tie the game in the 40th minute when Melanie Waters scored on a penalty kick for the team's lone goal.

The two teams played an evenly matched first half with Bridgewater holding a slim 9-8 edge in shots and each team getting one corner kick. The game was tied at the half due in large part to Johnson's play in goal where she totaled six of her career-high nine saves.

Johnson has allowed just two goals in over 260 minutes between the posts this season, totaling an impressive 0.68 goals against average while winning her first three collegiate starts.

The Mustangs managed to break through in the second half, outshooting the Eagles 14-5 and scoring twice, including the game-winner from Matlock less than five minutes in. The goal was her third of the season and her first game-winner. Eight of her 15 career goals have been winners.

Sophomore Meaghan Williams (Dundalk, Md./Dundalk) added an insurance tally in the 78th minute off an assist from junior Shannon McGuire (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) who picked up her third point of the season and her first assist.

Freshman Rebecca Moore (Middletown, Md./Middletown) made her first career appearance in relief of Johnson, stopping one shot in the final six minutes.

Stevenson concludes play in the Greensboro Tournament on Sunday against the host Pride. Game time is at 1:30 p.m.
