Mustangs Fall to Former CAC Rival Salisbury on 110th Minute Penalty Kick

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer junior Lauren Weitzman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) held Salisbury scoreless until the final minute of the game when Salisbury was awarded on penalty kick for a Mustang handball in the box, which was converted by Erin Mooney to give the Sea Gulls the 1-0 decision on Wednesday.

The goal was Mooney's second game-winner of the season and the fourth of her career.

Salisbury (6-3) leads the overall series 12-3-1, however, Stevenson is 3-3-1 in the last seven meetings, all under seventh year head coach Graeme Millar.

The loss also snapped a three-game winning streak for the Mustangs (6-3) in the series as well as holding the Sea Gulls scoreless since Sept. 19, 2009 for a span of 403:43.

Weitzman has been responsible for 223:43 of the scoreless streak while current volunteer assistant coach Brittany Ross '12 accounted for the other 180 minutes.

The Mustangs outshot the Sea Gulls 23-15, including 10-4 in the second half and 8-0 in the first overtime, with five shots on target in total.

The game proved to be very physical with few scoring chances as the teams combined for 27 fouls and four yellow cards.

Weitzman had six saves on the evening while counterpart Michelle Conrad had five.

Stevenson returns to action Saturday to host No. 3 Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams.  Game time is 1:00 p.m. and will be televised on MPT2 over-the-air on Channel 67.2, Comcast 268 and Verizon Fios 480.
