Mustangs Avenge Only Loss, Sweep Johns Hopkins For 13th-Straight Win

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's volleyball sophomore Megan Miller (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Tech) had a team-high nine kills and two total blocks to lead the Mustangs to their 13th consecutive victory 26-24, 25-18, 25-19 versus Johns Hopkins Tuesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium in front of the fourth largest crowd in school history.

Stevenson (16-1) avenged its only loss of the season after the Blue Jays posted a 25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 25-19, 12-15 victory in the championship game of the Giovanni Memorial Tournament hosted by Goucher on September 2.

After losing the first seven meetings in the series, the Mustangs have now won two of the last three against Hopkins, including the last two at home. Stevenson also swept the Blue Jays at home a year ago 26-24, 25-22, 25-16 on Sept. 27, 2011.

Hopkins has not won at Stevenson since Sept. 1, 1999.

The Blue Jays (16-1), who are receiving 33 votes in this week's AVCA Division III Coaches Poll placing them at No. 27, have won 36 of their last 40 games. Two of those four losses have come to Stevenson.

Tuesday's loss snapped the Blue Jays' 29-game regular-season winning streak and ended their school record 16-game win streak.

The game featured 28 ties and 12 lead changes, however, the Mustangs pulled away in each set earning six set-point opportunities in the final two sets.

Junior Jessica Gieselman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) totaled 28 assists and 10 digs while senior Kristen Lubeski (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) and freshman Imani Hudson (Burke, Va./Thomas Edison) each had three total blocks.

Junior Christine Isenberg (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) had four kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) had 25 digs. Perillo had 30 digs in the previous meeting with the Blue Jays.

Stevenson held Hopkins to a .098 attack percentage, marking the first time the Blue Jays were held to a sub-.100 hitting since a 3-1 loss to Thiel on Sept. 10, 2011 at the Marcia French Memorial Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio.

Johns Hopkins was led by 11 kills and five blocks from Jasmine Warmington. She had 23 kills in the first meeting this season. Carolyn Zin and Mariel Metalios dished out 13 and nine assists, respectively, while Amelia Thomas had 20 digs.

The Mustangs travel to York, Pennsylvania this weekend for the York College Spartan Invitational.  They will face SUNY Cortland on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., before taking on FDU-Florham at 7:00 p.m.
