Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by three points from junior Jamie Matlock (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland), the Stevenson women's soccer team jumped out to a two-goal lead and snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Catholic Wednesday at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (5-2), ranked sixth in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region, won its third-straight in the series against the Cardinals after losing seven in-a-row from 2003-09.
Matlock struck early in the fourth minute on a breakaway that had her 1-on-1 with Catholic goalkeeper Lexi Halperin, in which she calmly placed the ball inside the far post from 10 yards out for the early 1-0 lead.
Stevenson held the Cardinals (2-5) to only five shots in the game, two on target. The defense held Catholic without a shot for the first 20 minutes.
Shortly after the Cardinals' first shot of the evening, freshman Ashlyn Hawbaker (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) notched her third of the season off an assist from Matlock, which proved to be the game-winner.
Four minutes later, Lauren Cadott ended the shutout bid for junior goalkeeper Lauren Weitzman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) as she found the upper left 90 from nine yards out.
After the intermission, freshman Nicolette Stoner (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) scored her first collegiate goal on a helper from senior midfielder Kayla Curry (Timonium, Md./John Carroll).
The Mustangs played an aggressive game, outshooting their opponents by a near 3-to-1 margin and were called offsides a season-high eight times.
Weitzman, in her second game back since 2010, made one save on the evening while counterpart Halperin made four.
Stevenson returns to action this Friday, when the Mustangs host former CAC rival Frostburg State in a rematch of the 2011 ECAC Division III South Championship at Mustang Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
