Box Score BETHANY, W. Va. - For the second-straight game, the Stevenson men's soccer team had a goalie earn his first career shutout as freshman Kenneth Hersey (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) made seven saves to help lead the Mustangs to a 3-0 win over Moravian on Saturday at the Fuzzy Williams Memorial Tournament hosted by Bethany.
Stevenson (2-0) was declared the tournament champion over Washington and Lee by a plus-1 goal differential. The Mustangs outscored its two opponents 6-0 while the Generals did so by a margin of 7-2.
Stevenson has now won three of the last four tournaments its has entered after winning the Red Devil Classic at Dickinson a year ago and the Lycoming Kickoff Classic in 2010. The team also entered the Scrapyard Classic hosted by Franklin & Marshall last year, but went 0-2 with losses to Eastern and F&M.
The Red Devil Classic was also the last time that the Mustangs had back-to-back shutouts.
Junior Christopher Panian (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) scored for the second-straight day, netting the team's second goal in the 61st minute off an assist from sophomore Yianni Sarioglou (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall). The two also connected on the game-winning goal on Friday in the 17th minute.
Junior Steve Hamilton (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) picked up the game-winning goal on Saturday, scoring his first career goal as a Mustang in the 35th minute to give Stevenson a 1-0 halftime lead.
Stevenson took a 1-0 lead into the break despite being outshot, 6-2. However, the team drastically reversed that trend in the second half, outshooting the Greyhounds (0-2), 16-4.
Hersey totaled four of his seven saves in the opening half en route to earning his first career win as well as his first career shutout.
Freshman Zach Martin (Fallston, Md./Fallston) capped the scoring in the 88th minute with his first career tally off an assist from freshman Calvin Granger (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional).
All of the Mustangs' six goals this season have come from first-year players as well as 14 of the team's 17 points. Three of the goals and two of the five assists have come from freshmen.
Stevenson travels to Neumann on Wednesday. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
