Wright Sends Mustangs to CAC Title Game, Rally Falls Short at No. 6 Salisbury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. - A two-run, walk-off double by Stevenson baseball senior Jordan Wright (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) in the bottom of the ninth versus Wesley sent the Mustangs to the CAC championship game against Salisbury where a two-run home run by Salisbury's Joey Jones gave the No. 6 Sea Gulls an 8-6 victory Saturday at SU Baseball Field.

Stevenson (21-21-2) advanced to its second and final CAC title game in the last four years as it will moving to the Middle Atlantic Conference next season. The Mustangs' previous CAC championship game appearance came in 2009 when they were also beaten on the road by Salisbury, 16-5.

Stevenson's 8-7 win over Wesley in Saturday's semifinal assured the team of its first non-losing season since 2008 when it went 22-21-2.

Salisbury jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before the Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double to right by senior Zac Stavish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll).

After a scoreless second, the Sea Gulls (30-7) scored a run in each of the next three innings to take a 6-2 advantage after five.

Stevenson got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) before Jones' two-run shot to right pushed Salisbury's lead to 8-3.

Jones' first home run of the season proved to be the difference as the Mustangs tried to mount a comeback, scoring three runs to pull within two at 8-6 with only one out in the bottom of the ninth.

However, after a two-run triple by junior Josh Morris (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and an RBI-ground out by senior Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Md./Calvert Hall), Sea Gull relief pitcher Devin Gardner retired Stavish and senior Tony Prescott (Elkridge, Md./Howard) to earn his first save of the season.

Morris finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Stavish was 1-for-5 with two runs batted in. Goulian and junior Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) each had two hits.

Anderson totaled three hits on the day, raising his season total to 72 and his career total to 207, five more than Matt Waltrop's previous career record.

Sophomore Drew Liebert (Towson, Md./Towson), who set a new single-season school record with eight wins this season, suffered his fourth loss after allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits over 7.2 innings.

Meanwhile, Andrew Levy earned his seventh win in eight decisions this season after scattering seven hits over 6.2 innings. He allowed just three earned runs only one of which came after the first inning.

In the opener versus Wesley, the Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Wolverines scored seven-straight runs to take a three-run lead into the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and runners on first and third, Stevenson pulled within one on RBI singles by Prescott and junior Mitch Berman (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll).

With Stevenson trailing 8-7 and runners on first and second, Wright drove a 1-1 pitch into right field, scoring Stavish and pinch-runner Michael Vitcavich (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) to cap the comeback with a walk-off double off of Wesley starter Jordan Lozzi.

Prescott went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and his 11th home run of the season, setting a new Stevenson single-season record. Morris was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in and finished the day with four hits and four RBIs.

Senior Tyler Anzmann (Westminster, Md./Westminster) earned his first win of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth.
