Box Score YORK, Pa. - Stevenson baseball senior Zac Stavish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, but York (Pa.) used a five-run second inning to take a three-run lead which it would never relinquish en route to an 8-5 victory at Jaquet Field Wednesday in the first round of the CAC Baseball Championship.
The Mustangs (18-18-2) committed two errors which led to five unearned runs for the Spartans while stranding 10 runners left on base.
Stavish gave Stevenson a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI-double that scored sophomore Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and junior Josh Morris (Gambrills, Md./Arundel).
However, the lead would be short-lived as the Spartans (17-17) scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the second, including three on a home run by Steve Tretter against sophomore ace Drew Liebert (Towson, Md./Towson).
Libert's throwing error on a ground ball by Nic Long prolonged the inning and allowed York (Pa.) to score all five runs after what should have been the final out of the inning.
Tretter gave the Spartans a 6-2 lead with an RBI-double in the fourth before they pushed it to 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by Andrew Hershey.
The Mustangs scored two unearned runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Morris that was aided by two York (Pa.) errors, including a fielding error by Tretter on Morris' single that allowed junior Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) and senior Jordan Wright (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) to score.
That would be as close as Stevenson would get as Dan McNamara and Brandon Ullom pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief while allowing just two hits. Ullom picked up his eighth save of the season in the process.
Morris was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Bratter and Wright each had two hits.
Tretter finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBIs while Hershey went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Spartans. Tommy Moran improved his record to 5-2 as a starter after scattering eight hits over 5.2 innings and allowing just three earned runs while striking out four.
The Mustangs will face St. Mary's (Md.) in an elimination game on Friday at 9:00 a.m., at Salisbury.
