Box Score STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson baseball junior Matt Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) drove in a career-high four runs while senior Pat Quinn (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) earned his 11th career save as the Mustangs defeated future MAC rival Messiah Wednesday at Park Field, 12-11.
Stevenson (8-5) scored at least 10 runs for the third time in the last six games and is now 6-3 at the new Park Field which was officially dedicated with a ribbon cutting ceremony prior to Wednesday's game.
The Mustangs jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the second against the defending Commonwealth Conference champions, scoring four runs on two, two-run singles by juniors Josh Morris (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Brad Blum (Olney, Md./Magruder).
Also in the inning, senior Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Md./Calvert Hall) had a single through the right side to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. The reigning CAC Offensive Player of the Week finished the game 3-for-5, totaling his seventh multi-hit game this season.
Meanwhile, Blum extended his hitting streak to seven games while senior Zac Stavish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) and junior Heath Johnson (New Castle, Del./Wilmington) are both at six.
The Falcons (1-5) began to chip away at the lead with a run in the top of the third before adding three in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-6.
Sam Tajiri scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to pull Messiah within one, but Stevenson would respond with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including two on a two-run single to left center by Bratter, to push the lead back to four, 11-7.
However, the Falcons would tie the game with four runs in the top of the eighth, two of which came on a two-run single to left by Paul Mellinger.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eight, the Mustangs would score the game-winning run on a suicide squeeze by Bratter that scored freshman Michael Vitcavich (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) who entered the game as a pinch runner for Anderson.
Bratter went 1-for-3 with four RBIs while Blum was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Stavish and senior Tony Prescott (Elkridge, Md./Howard) each had three hits.
Quinn entered in the ninth and retired the Falcons in order, including the last two by strike out, to earn his first save of the season and first since Mar 25, 2011 in a 9-7 road win at Wesley.
Junior Tim Pyle (Silver Spring, Md./Coventry School) came on in relief in the eighth inning and earned his first win of the season after going 3-3 a year ago.
Zach Adams suffered the loss for the Falcons after allowing four earned runs on five hits over an inning-and-a-third. Mellinger finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday when it hosts Johns Hopkins at Park Field beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Blue Jays are currently receiving votes in this week's D3Baseball.com Top 25 Poll. The Mustangs handed Hopkins an 8-4 loss at home last season on Apr. 4, 2011 when the team was ranked at No. 16.
