Box Score 2 STEVENSON, Md. - Strong pitching, highlighted by two saves from senior Pat Quinn (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) and timely offense from senior Jordan Wright (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and freshman Michael Vitcavich (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) led the Stevenson baseball team to a sweep of Wesley in a CAC doubleheader Saturday at Park Field.
With the sweep, 6-3 and 4-3, the Mustangs (17-11-1, 8-6 CAC) find themselves in second place in the CAC standings, three games behind first-place Salisbury and two ahead of third-place Frostburg State and York (Pa.) who wrap-up their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday.
In addition, head coach Jason Tawney needs just four more wins to reach 200 for his career.
Both teams plated three runs in the first inning of game one with the Wolverines scoring two unearned as the result of an error and passed ball.
In the bottom of the inning, Stevenson tied the game when senior Tony Prescott (Elkridge, Md./Howard) stole home as part of a double steal with Wright.
The Mustangs broke the game open with three more runs in the bottom of the third, including two on a two-run double by Wright and the game-winning run by senior Zac Stavish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) who scored on a wild pitch.
After allowing three runs on two hits in the top of the first, freshman Drew Liebert (Towson, Md./Towson) did not allow another run while scattering five hits over the next 5.1 innings in picking up his sixth win of the season.
The first three batters reached base for Wesley (15-9, 4-7 CAC) in the top of the seventh before Quinn entered in relief of Liebert and got pinch-hitter Greg McKee to line into a double play with one out and the bases loaded, preserving the win for Stevenson.
Wright was 1-for-2 with two RBIs while Stavish and Merkel were 1-for-2 with one RBI each.
Senior Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) went 0-for-3 in the first game which snapped his 11-game hit streak. It was just the third game in 29 this season that he has not had at least one hit.
Merkel, who already had a nine-game hit streak this season, extended his current streak to seven.
Stevenson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two with a run in each of the first three innings.
The Wolverines answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one before the Mustangs answered with what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single by Vitcavich.
In 11 appearances this season, Vitcavich is 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and five runs scored.
Anderson was 2-for-3 with one RBI while sophomore Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Anderson now has 189 career hits, 11 shy of 200 and 13 shy of the school record.
Senior D.J. Milliken (Owings, Md./Northern) earned his third win of the season on the mound, allowing just seven hits and two earned runs over 6.1 innings before giving way to Quinn who earned his second save of the day and fourth of the season by retiring both batters he faced in the seventh.
The single-season saves leader with seven in 2010, Quinn now has 14 for his career.
