YORK, Pa. - Stevenson baseball senior D.J. Milliken (Owings/Northern) remained unbeaten in five starts this season while the Mustangs snapped a four-game losing streak versus York (Pa.) with a convincing 10-4 victory in game two of a CAC doubleheader Saturday at Jaquet Field. The Spartans won a pitcher's duel in game one, 1-0.
Stevenson (12-8-1, 4-4 CAC) maintained its hold on third place in the CAC standings, one game behind St. Mary's (Md.) and two in back of Salisbury.
It was the Mustangs' first win in the series since a 6-2 victory at Jaquet Field on Mar. 20, 2010.
Milliken allowed just three earned runs over 5.2 innings and struck out three as he avenged last season's 5-1 home loss to the Spartans in which he also went 5.2 innings and struck out three on Mar. 12, 2011. Saturday marked his 40th career appearance and 32nd start.
Offensively, Stevenson totaled 10 runs on 15 hits, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first and a 5-2 advantage after five. Senior Tony Prescott (Elkridge, Md./Howard) drove in the eventual game-winning run with a, two-out, RBI-double to left in the fifth that scored senior Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall).
Holding a 5-3 lead, the Mustangs erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh, marking the sixth time this season that they have scored five or more runs in a single inning. The season-high is eight set in the second inning of a 12-11 victory over Messiah on March 7.
Prescott and Anderson each had two hits and two RBIs in the game while sophomore Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Senior Jordan Wright (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) was 2-for-2 after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the sixth.
Drew Frankenfield was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for York who fell for the third time in four home games this season. Dan Gurganus took the loss after allowing five earned runs in 5.0 innings of work.
Offense was hard to come by in game one as the Spartans' Tommy Moran outdueled Stevenson freshman ace Drew Liebert (Towson, Md./Towson). The two combined for 10 strikeouts over 15.1 innings while allowing just 17 hits before a walk-off single by Frankenfield in the bottom of the eighth gave York the one-run victory.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for Libert who had not lost since a 5-1 setback in the season-opener at Hampden-Sydney on February 11 in his first career appearance.
It was also the Mustangs' third extra-inning game of the season. They are now 1-2.
Offensively, Anderson went 3-for-4 while senior Zac Stavish was 1-for-2 with two walks. It was Anderson's team-leading 12th multi-hit game this season and third with at least three.
Eight different players combined for the Spartans' nine hits.
Stevenson and York wrap-up their three-game CAC series at Jaquet Field on Sunday. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
