Mustangs Fall at Messiah in Conference Championship, Await NCAA Selections

Box Score

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Led by two goals from Alicia Frey and a goal and an assist from Most Valuable Player Rachel Scheibeler, the No. 1-ranked Messiah women's soccer team won its sixth-straight Commonwealth Conference championship with a 7-0 victory over Stevenson Sunday at Shoemaker Field.

Stevenson (12-5-3), who was making its third conference championship game appearance in the last four years, will now await the selection show for the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship to see if it will be making its fourth NCAA tournament appearance in program history and the second in the last three years.

The Mustangs were ranked fifth in this week's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll and sixth in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll.

Meanwhile, Messiah (18-1-1) will be making its 13th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament as recipients of the Commonwealth Conference's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.

Frey scored both of her goals in the game's first 16 minutes just 3:11 apart as Messiah took a 2-0 lead. The Falcons would score three goals in the opening half, the last of which came from Mackenzie Clapper at 37:58 to give them a 3-0 halftime lead.

Messiah added four second-half goals, including two in the last 4:49, to win its 12th Commonwealth Conference title in the last 13 years. The team's only loss came to Elizabethtown in 2006.

Freshman Allison Johnson (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) finished with three saves, but allowed four goals in suffering her first loss in 14 career appearances, falling to 9-1-2.

The loss also ended a streak of four-straight shutouts for the Mustangs who hadn't allowed a goal in the 410:44 before Frey's first at 12:44.

The selection show for the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship is at 1:30 p.m., on Monday at NCAA.com. To watch the show live, click here.
