Meaghan Williams Nets a Pair in Defeat of Alvernia on Senior Day

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sophomore Meaghan Williams (Dundalk, Md./Dundalk) scored two goals, one to open each half, as the Mustangs clinch the second seed in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs by defeating Alvernia, 6-0 on Senior Day Saturday at Mustang Stadium.

Stevenson (12-4-2, 6-1-2 MAC) extended its undefeated streak to eight, posting its seventh shutout of the season and its sixth in the last seven games. During the month of October, the team has allowed just two goals while outscoring its opponents, 24-2.

Since 2008, the Mustangs have posted a 29-4-5 record in the month of October. Furthermore, the Mustangs last had an undefeated October in 2009, where they went 7-0 en route to tying the school record for wins in a season, 15, set by the 2006 squad.

Stevenson will host Elizabethtown, the 3-seed, who defeated Widener, 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday night.  Both teams finished with 20 points, however, the Mustangs hold the tiebreaker by virtue of their 2-1 victory over fourth-seeded Lebanon Valley on October 2.  The Blue Jays tied the Dutchmen 1-1 on October 20.

In pre-game ceremonies, the Mustangs honored seniors Taylor Zimmerman (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) and Kayla Curry (Timonium, Md./John Carroll).  During their four years they amassed a record of 53-21-8 and captured the 2010 CAC Women's Soccer Championship.

Williams scored her fourth of the season 2:21 into the game on an unassisted tally.  She would later repeat scoring 3:07 into the second half off a feed from junior Alexa Narron (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial).

The Mustangs would score five second half goals including the first career goals by sophomore Morgan Burns (Mardela Springs, Md./Mardela) in the 66th minute and freshman Taylor Venturino (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) in the 84th minute.

Burns and Venturino became the 17th and 18th different player to score a goal this season for Stevenson.

Colleen Maher recorded five saves for Alvernia (8-9-3, 2-6-1 MAC), while freshman goalkeeper Allison Johnson (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) improved her record to 9-0-1, making one save in the first 45 minutes.  Junior Lauren Weitzman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) started the second half and made two saves.
