Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer senior Josh Brewer (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) tied the game at 1-1 in the 74th minute, ten minutes later junior Christopher Panian (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) tied the game again at 2-2, but Alvernia's Kyle Martyn notched his team-leading eighth goal of the season with 29 seconds remaining to defeat the Mustangs, 3-2 on Senior Night Saturday at Mustang Stadium.
With the win, the Crusaders (10-6-3, 5-4 MAC) clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs as the 4-seed. They will host Arcadia, the 5-seed, who defeated Lebanon Valley, 3-1 on Saturday night. Both teams finished with 15 points, however, Alvernia holds the tiebreaker by virtue of their 3-2 victory over the Knights on October 17.
Alvernia took the early 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Alex Martyn assisted by Joe Raymond.
The Mustangs (8-10-1, 3-5-1 MAC) would tie the game at one on a corner kick taken by junior Steve Hamilton (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) that found freshman Khristian Hall (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College) who found Brewer at the top of the 6 and scored his second career goal.
The Crusaders would take the lead four minutes later on a goal by Josh Wallaston.
In the 84th minute, Panian scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Yianni Sarioglou (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall). For Sarioglou, he finishes the season as the second leading scorer with 11 points on two goals and a team-high seven assists.
In the final minute, Kyle Martyn would go 1-on-1 with freshman goalkeeper Kenneth Hersey (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) after teammate Cody Shirk found him on the right wing and score on the far post with 29 seconds remaining to provide the final 3-2 scoreline.
Hersey finished with four saves while his counterpart Ben Diller was not required to make a save.
In pre-game ceremonies the Mustangs honored seniors Brewer, Kevin Rama (Upper Marlboro, Md./DeMatha), Bradley Davis (Perry Hall, Md./Archbishop Curley), Ryan Pierce (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), Chris Contino (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), John Adamo (Glassboro, N.J./Washington Township), Jose Sarmiento (Takoma Park, Md./Montgomery Blair), Marco Caltabiano (Lothian, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Kyle Kauffman (Lancaster, Pa./Octarora).
