Mustangs Battle Blue Jays to 1-1 Tie in Commonwealth Conference Contest

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer junior Jennifer Simkin (Halethorpe, Md./Centennial) scored off an assist from junior Jamie Matlock (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland) with under minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime as the Mustangs battled Elizabethtown to a 1-1 tie in double overtime Tuesday at Mustang Stadium.

It was the third double overtime game for Stevenson (9-4-2, 3-1-2 MAC) this season and the second at home. The team is now 0-1-2 in overtime games this season.

Meanwhile, it was the fifth double overtime game for the Blue Jays who remained unbeaten at in those games at 1-0-4.

Elizabethtown (8-3-4, 4-1-1 MAC) entered the game in second place in the Commonwealth Conference standings, two points ahead of the Mustangs. Stevenson is now in fourth place with 12 points, one point behind Albright who beat Widener on the road Tuesday, 2-1. Both teams trail Messiah (18 points) and Elizabethtown (13 points).

Neither team was able to break through until the 72nd minute when the Blue Jays' Deanna Slater scored her team-leading sixth goal of the game off an assist from Trisha Clark to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Clark sent a through ball into the box to Slater who, after a collision with Stevenson freshman Allison Johnson (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape), collected the ball and tapped into the empty net from two yards out.

The goal was the first allowed by Johnson in the last four games, snapping a personal scoreless streak of 390:03. As a team, Stevenson had not allowed a goal in 439:03, dating back to the third minute of a 2-1 victory at Lebanon Valley on October 2.

After holding a slim 5-3 advantage in shots in the second half, the Mustangs would get the equalizer with just 4:45 remaining in regulation as Simkin netted her third goal of the season off a feed from Matlock to send the game into overtime.

Both teams had excellent opportunities to win the game in overtime, the first coming from Slater who hit the crossbar in the 97th minute before Stevenson had its chance in the 105th minute. However, a shot by freshman Allie Ondrejcak (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) from the top of the box sailed just high over the bar, keeping the game tied at 1-1.

Despite allowing her first goal in four starts, Johnson remained unbeaten this season at 6-0-1. The reigning, two-time Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week finished with five saves in her ninth start of the season.

Jess Manchak had just one save for the Blue Jays.

The Mustangs face another critical game with postseason implications on Saturday when they travel to Albright for a 5:30 p.m., contest with the Lions.
