Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The combination of Taylor Alwine and Nadine Yunginger scored back-to-back goals just 51 seconds apart in the first half and it proved to be enough to lead the No. 18 Elizabethtown field hockey team to a 2-1 Commonwealth Conference victory over Stevenson Tuesday at Mustang Stadium.
The game was the sixth for the Mustangs (6-11, 2-4 MAC) this season decided by just one goal. They are now 2-4 in those games, including 1-2 at home.
The first half proved to be the difference in the game as the Blue Jays held a 12-2 advantage in shots and a 7-1 margin in penalty corners. All three of the game's goals came in a span of just 3:48.
Elizabethtown (12-3, 5-1 MAC) struck first with 14:03 remaining in the first half when Alwine scored on an assist from Yunginger as the result of a penalty corner.
The duo would strike again with 13:12 left as Alwine netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season off a feed from Yunginger after she dribbled up the left side and fed Alwine inside the circle. The assist gave Yunginger 14 on the season, the most in the Commonwealth Conference this season.
Trailing 2-0, Stevenson would cut its deficit in half when freshman Karen Mata (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) scored her second career goal with 10:15 to play in the opening half of an assist from junior Alyssa Russell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven).
The goal was Mata's first since she had the game-winner in a 3-1 victory at Frostburg State on September 18 while Russell picked up her first point of the season.
Despite holding a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners in the second half, the Mustangs could not get the equalizer as both teams managed just two shots apiece.
Freshman Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) made four saves for Stevenson while Lindy Hamp made one for the Blue Jays.
With two conference games remaining this season, Stevenson travels to Alvernia on Saturday for a key contest with playoff implications beginning at 1:00 p.m.
