Box Score ANNVILLE, Pa. - Stevenson field hockey sophomore Caitlin Dempsey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored the game's first goal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead just 15 minutes into the game, but they couldn't hold on against the conference's second-place team on the road in a 2-1 loss Saturday at Arnold Field.
Stevenson (6-10, 2-3 MAC) suffered its fourth-straight loss overall and fourth on the road.
Saturday's game was filled with emotion as Mustang second-year head coach Laurel Martin made her first return to Lebanon Valley since serving 10 seasons as the Dutchmen's head coach from 2001-10. During that time, she led the team to a 169-50 record, six NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship appearances and a conference title in 2006.
In addition to Martin's return, Lebanon Valley also chose to honor its nine seniors, all of whom played two season for Martin in 2009 and 2010.
Dempsey's seventh goal of the season with 19:28 remaining in the first half gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead which they would hold into halftime, despite the Dutchmen holding a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners and a 6-4 margin in shots.
Stevenson's lead held until there were less than 28 minutes remaining in the second half when Lebanon Valley was awarded one of two penalty strokes in the game. After Kelsey Miller was taken out on a breakaway by freshman Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall), Bridget Monighan converted her third penalty stroke in as many attempts this season to tie the game at 1-1.
The Dutchmen (9-5, 5-1 MAC), who entered the game tied for second in the Commonwealth Conference standings, missed their second penalty stroke of the game 10 minutes later when Lauren Brumbach missed high over the goal and to the left.
Then, Lebanon Valley got the game-winner from Caitlin Vasey when she netted her third goal of the season of an assist by Kelsey Miller with just 2:38 remaining in the game.
The Dutchmen finished the game with a 16-6 advantage in shots and a 15-4 margin in penalty corners.
Cavanaugh and Chloe Baro were each credited with five saves.
