Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Led by 11 kills and 12 digs from sophomore Christine Isenberg (Taneytown/Francis Scott Key), the Stevenson women's volleyball team won its third-straight game, defeating local rival Johns Hopkins for the first time in school history, 26-24, 25-22, 25-16 Tuesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The win was the first in eight all-time meetings for the Mustangs (15-2, 2-1 CAC) against the Blue Jays in a series that began in 1999. Prior to Wednesday, the two teams had played only once since 2003 with Johns Hopkins posting a 3-0 decision at home on Sept. 23, 2009.
Isenberg totaled her team-leading sixth double double of the season and fifth in the last nine games.
Junior Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) added a game-high 11 kills, marking the fourth consecutive game in which she has had at least 11. She also reached double digits in six of her last seven contests and is second on the team with 125 kills.
The first set was tight throughout with neither team holding a lead larger than six points. Down set point at 26-25, Stevenson freshman Megan Miller (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Tech) came up with one of her six kills, before closing out the set with back-to-back service aces.
The Blue Jays (10-4, 2-0 CC), led by Melissa Cole who finished with 10 kills and 21 digs, kept the match close in the second set which featured 13 ties and four lead changes. Tied at 22-22, Stevenson recorded the final three points with the final two coming off of blocks by Gabbard, Miller and sophomore Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mills).
Gieselman finished with 28 assists, 14 digs and four kills.
Freshman Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) finished with 21 digs, four shy of her career-high set versus Catholic on September 2 while senior Brooke Gilley (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) totaled a career-high four service aces and added five kills.
Stevenson will face its second-straight Centennial Conference opponent on Thursday when it travels to Washington (Md.). Game time is at 7:00 p.m. Last season, the Mustangs swept the Shorewomen at home on Sept. 9, 2010, 25-12, 25-15, 25-14.
