Men's Soccer Falls in Double Overtime to Eastern at Scrapyard Classic, 2-1

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Just one day after winning their season opener in dramatic fashion at Bridgewater (Va.), the Stevenson men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Eastern in double overtime Friday night at Franklin and Marshall's Scrapyard Classic.

Braden Gross scored his second goal of the night in the 104th minute to give the Eagles (1-0) the win in their first game of the season.

Meanwhile, the loss ended the eight-game unbeaten streak for the Mustangs (1-1) that dated back to last season. They started well, earning a corner kick just six minutes into the contest, but could not convert.

Stevenson kept up the pressure and in the 20th minute when freshman Fabian Allen (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Morristown, N.J.), just one minute after coming on as a sub, gained the ball in the box and placed his shot in the upper left corner for his first career goal that gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

Stevenson held the advantage in the first half, outshooting the Eagles 4-1 and earning a 4-1 edge in corners as well.

However, Gross made the most of the Eagles' lone chance however, tying the game in the 37th minute with the first of his two goals.

The second half showed a change in roles as the Eagles took to the offensive, holding a 10-5 advantage in shots. Led by senior goalie Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J/Middlesex), the Mustang defense held strong, shutting Eastern out in the second 45 minutes while facing ten shots in the period.

The game remained tied halfway in to the second overtime when Gross struck the game winner and his second career multi-goal game. Pablo Villeda gained the right flank and lofted a cross to the middle where Gross headed home the finisher.

Flannelly made five saves.

Stevenson has a chance to rebound quickly as it takes on host Franklin & Marshall Saturday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
