Box Score OWINGS MILLS, MD – Sophomore Jamie Matlock (Bridgeton, N.J/Cumberland) scored the game's only goal in the 87th as the Stevenson women's soccer team defeated Eastern 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The game looked destined to be the second straight home scoreless draw for the Mustangs before Matlock finished her late chance. Sophomore Mackenzie Calhoun (Ellicott City/Howard) started the move when she received the ball at the top of the box. The midfield then Matlock streaking towards the far post, who took a touch, then calmly slotted the ball into the near post for the winner.
The goal is Matlock's second game winner of the year and fourth of her young career.
The Mustangs remain unbeaten at Mustang Stadium and also extended their home unbeaten streak to five games dating back to last season.
Much of the game was played in midfield as both defenses held a high line, limiting the opposition to through balls and crosses from the wing.
After a cagey opening, Stevenson got the game going when Matlock was played through. Her shot however, was stopped by charging Eastern keeper Alysia Goodman. Senior Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin) looked to put the home team ahead in the 25th minute, but her shot hooked just outside of the near post. The Mustangs kept up the pressure throughout the game, outshooting the Eagles 11-6.
The Mustang defense, led by senior Julie Dempsey (Waldorf/Westlake) and junior Taylor Zimmerman (Jarrettsville/John Carroll), held the Eagles to only one shot on goal in the first half.
While she was not called upon to make a save, senior goalie Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna Park) kept Eastern at bay claiming all crosses into her box. The shutout is her third of the season and 13th of her career. Ross, the winningest keeper in program history, also recorded the 24th win of her career.
The Mustangs continue their non-conference schedule tomorrow when they take on Richard Stockton at Mustang Stadium at 2:00 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. Stevenson coach Graeme Millar is 2005 graduate of Richard Stockton College.
