Women's Soccer Battles Cabrini to Scoreless Draw in Season Opener

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - On opening night at the newly constructed Mustang Stadium Thursday, the Stevenson women's soccer team dominated the majority of the game, outshooting Cabrini 23-2, but couldn't find the back of the net, extending their home unbeaten streak to five in the season opener for both teams.

Stevenson (0-0-1) took control of the game early, dominating possession and chances, while holding Cabrini without a shot through the first 45 minutes.

The Cavaliers (0-0-1) countered by playing a high line in the back, limiting the Stevenson midfield to attempting through balls.

Senior Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin) found her way behind the defense twice in the first half, but Cabrini keeper Maddy Edwards alertly came off her line to cut off the attack.  Eyler combined well with sophomore Jamie Matlock (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland) as the duo combined for 11 shots, seven of which were on goal.

Midway through the first half, the Mustangs began working the right flank with outside back Alexa Narron (Ellicott City/Centennial) providing danger balls into the box. One found Matlock in front, but header was just off goal.

The Mustangs kept up their concerted attack into the second half, holding a 12-1 edge in shot while drawing five corner kicks. Stevenson totaled 10 corners while not allowing one in return.

Sophomore Kayla Curry (Baltimore/Catholic) and senior Julie Dempsey (Waldorf/Waldorf) bolstered a Stevenson defensive effort that performed well considering the absence of junior Taylor Zimmerman (Jarrettsville/John Carroll). The Mustangs held the Cabrini attack without a shot until the 79th minute.

Senior Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna Park) finished with two saves en route to recording her 11th career shutout. The winningest goalie in Stevenson history, Ross is also fourth on the school's career saves list.

The Mustangs return to action on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., when they take host Elizabethtown in the opening game of the Blue Jay Classic. Last year, Stevenson's future MAC rival pulled out a 3-0 decision at home on Sept. 25, 2010.
