WASHINGTON, D.C. - Stevenson baseball junior Kyle Van Beek (Bel Air/John Carroll) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs while sophomore Chris DeFeo (Columbia/Long Reach) had the first multi-hit game of his career with two as the Mustangs snapped a four-game losing streak with a season-ending 9-8 win over Catholic at Talbot Field Tuesday.
The win was the fourth in the last seven on the road for Stevenson (13-26) who went just 5-17 away from home this season.
Junior D.J. Milliken (Owings/Northern) picked up his second win in the last three starts after starting the season 0-5 as he scattered six runs and seven hits over 6.2 innings. It was the fifth decision of the season for Milliken by two runs or less, including third by only one run.
Led by Van Beek and DeFeo, each of Stevenson's nine starters had at least one hit as the Mustangs jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the top of the third. The lead-off hitter reached base in each of the first three innings and in seven of nine for the game.
Playing in their final games, seniors Jeff Bihy (Baltimore/Eastern Tech), Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg/Westminster) and Cody Schuchman (Baltimore/Calvert Hall) each went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Schuchman also added two RBIs, one of which came in the top of the second when Tarlow scored on a single to left after he led off the inning with his 13th career triple, one shy of the school record held by current assistant coach Wade Keenan '09.
Trailing 7-3, Catholic (19-16) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, two of which were unearned, to pull within one.
The Mustangs scored two runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run single by Van Beek to take a 9-6 lead. Both runs proved to be the difference as the Cardinals scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning before junior Zac Stavish (Westminster/South Carroll) was able to pick up his first save after Catholic's Matt Grieb was thrown out trying to steal home with two outs.
Dan Sullivan led the Cardinals by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and his first home run of the season while Chris McLoud and Marc Kalokitis each were 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Junior Tony Prescott (Elkridge/Howard) was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
