Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, Md. - The Stevenson baseball team left 13 runners on base and were just 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position in game one before the Mustangs fell victim to a complete-game and seven strikeouts from Jordan Lozzi in game two as Wesley swept a CAC doubleheader Tuesday at Yankee Stadium Field, 6-4 and 3-2.
Stevenson (7-19, 3-9 CAC) could not take advantage of eight hits and seven walks in the opener as the Wolverines scored three, first-inning runs and never trailed.
The Mustangs cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by freshman Brian Poppleton (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Freedom) before pulling within one again in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-single by Poppleton after junior Kyle Van Beek (Bel Air/John Carroll) led off the inning with a triple to left.
Although Stevenson had the tying run on second with only one out in the sixth, the Wolverines were able to escape the threat when D.J. Keckler struck out one and induced two pop outs.
Wesley (15-10, 7-4 CAC) would add two insurance runs in top of the seventh as the Mustangs could only managed one run on a sacrifice fly by freshman Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) despite loading the bases with no outs.
Poppleton finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Van Beek and junior Tony Prescott (Elkridge/Howard) each were 2-for-4.
Keckler managed to pick up his fourth win by overcoming four earned runs, seven walks and eight hits.
Junior D.J. Milliken (Owings/Northern) suffered his fifth loss in eight starts this season, but did limit the Wolverines to only two runs on two hits over 5.0 innings after surrendering three runs on four hits in the first.
Lozzi had a strong performance in game two, allowing just one earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven over seven innings to remain perfect this season at 5-0.
Not to be outdone, freshman Ryan Kellough (Waldorf/Thomas Stone) also had a noteworthy performance, holding Welsey to just one earned on six hits over 5.0 innings as Stevenson tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on RBIs from junior Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) and junior Zac Stavish (Westminster/South Carroll).
The game would stay tied until the top of the sixth when the Wolverines loaded the bases on an intentional walk to Rob Benedict before scoring the game-winning run when Jon Carlson was hit-by-pitch with two outs.
Senior Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg/Westminster) totaled two of the Mustangs' seven hits as he was 2-for-3. Anderson finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts a nine-inning, non-conference contest versus Eastern Mennonite beginning at 3:30 p.m.
