Five-Run Eighth Inning Leads Baseball to Comeback Win at Wesley, 9-6

Box Score

DOVER, Del. - A two-run single by junior Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) in the top of the eighth inning capped a five-run rally as the Stevenson baseball team erased a two-run deficit to win its second-straight game with a 9-7 victory over second-place Wesley Friday at Bob Reed Field.

Both teams combined for 16 runs, 20 hits and 10 errors with the Mustangs (7-16, 3-6 CAC) totaling 13 hits, including five in the eighth to go along with two unearned runs.

Stevenson led 4-1 in the top of the third after a two-run single by Anderson in the first, an RBI ground out by senior Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg/Westminster) in the second and an RBI single to center by junior Zac Stavish (Westminster/South Carroll) in the third.

However, the Wolverines (13-10, 5-4 CAC) would take their first lead with four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run double by Geoff Kimmel. Kimmel gave them the lead when he scored an unearned run on a single by Steve Perone.

Neither team would score again until the Wolverines added another run in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 6-4. Jon Carlson led off the inning on a hit-by-pitch before coming around to score on a single to center by Perone.

Five consecutive batters reached base on three hits, a walk and an error for the Mustangs with one out in the eighth as they tied the score on an unearned run by freshman Scott Merkel (Hampstead/Calvert Hall)

With two outs, Anderson drove in freshman Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and senior Cody Schuchman (Baltimore/Calvert Hall) for what proved to be the game-winning runs, both of which were unearned as the Wolverines committed three errors in the inning.

Junior Tim Pyle (Silver Spring/The Coventry School) earned his second win after allowing two runs on three hits over 2.0 innings in his team-leading 11th appearance of the season. Junior Pat Quinn (Mt. Airy/Linganore) picked up his second save of the season after retiring all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth.

Four Mustangs recorded at least two hits on the day, with Stavish going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Anderson finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs while Tarlow had two sacrifice RBIs.

Carlson went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs for the Wolverines.

Stevenson and Wesley conclude their three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium Field beginning at 2:00 p.m.
