Freshman Duo Rallies Mustangs For Walk-Off Win Over Gettysburg, 10-9

Box Score

ABERDEEN, Md. - Stevenson baseball freshman Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) had a walk-off two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth while freshman Ryan Kellough (Waldorf/Thomas Stone) pitched a shutout over the final six innings as the Mustangs picked up their first win, 10-9 over Gettysburg Sunday at Yankee Stadium Field.

Stevenson (1-8) rallied from an eight-run deficit over the final six innings to pick up a win in its home opener for the third consecutive season.

The Bullets jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the top of the third, scoring five runs against junior starter Tyler Anzmann (Westminster/Westminster) and four versus sophomore Tim Pyle (Silver Spring/Covenant Life).

However, the Mustangs started the comeback with two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run single from senior Jeff Bihy (Baltimore/Eastern Tech).

Stevenson scored at least one run in each of the final five innings and in seven of nine overall.

The Mustangs got an RBI single from sophomore Cody Schuchman (Baltimore/Calvert Hall) in the fifth and an RBI single from Bihy and RBI double by junior Tony Prescott (Elkridge/Howard) in the seventh to pull within two before a Gettysburg throwing error in the eighth made it a one-run game going into the ninth.

With two outs and sophomore Heath Johnson (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) on third in the ninth, Stevenson got a key pinch-hit walk from sophomore Mitch Berman (Hampstead/North Carroll) before he stole second and freshman Scott Merkel (Hampstead/Calvert Hall) walked to load the bases.

Goulian then drove the first pitch he saw from Brett Norton into left field to score Johnson and Berman, giving the Mustangs their third walk-off win in nine games at Yankee Stadium Field.

Of Stevenson's nine games at its new home field the last two seasons, the team has played in six that were decided by one run, winning three.

In his first career appearance, Kellough limited the Bullets to just four hits while striking out four over the final six innings to earn his first career win.

Goulian reached base in five of his six plate appearances, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two walks and four runs scored. Bihy finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs while senior Dustin Tarlow (Finksburg/Westminster) also had two hits.

Matt Karis went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for Gettysburg (0-3) while Patrick O'Grady was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday with its second-straight contest against a team from the Centennial Conference when it hosts McDaniel beginning at 3:00 p.m.
