Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson senior Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season and the 60th of her career to lead the Mustangs to a 1-0 victory over CAC rival Salisbury Wednesday at Mustang Stadium.
The win was the third-straight for Stevenson (11-4-2, 4-1-1 CAC) against the Sea Gulls who had won the first 15 meetings in the series. It also improved the team's record to 33-14-3 under fifth-year head coach Graeme Millar. The team is unbeaten in seven out of nine at Mustang Stadium this season.
The Mustangs, who entered the game ranked at No. 10 in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region, handed eighth-ranked Salisbury its first conference loss while also snapped the team's eight-game winning streak.
As a result of the win, Stevenson finds itself tied for second in the CAC standings with Frostburg State who defeated York (Pa.) on the road Wednesday, 2-1. Both teams are tied with 5-1-1 conference records.
The Mustangs travel to Mary Washington on Saturday while the Bobcats head to Wesley. A win against the Eagles would ensure Stevenson of at least the No. 2 seed and a bye in the first round of the 2011 CAC Women's Soccer Championship.
Even if Frostburg State beats the Wolverines, the Mustangs would own the tiebreaker against the Bobcats by virtue of today's victory against the first-place Sea Gulls.
Meanwhile, Salisbury (10-4-2, 6-1 CAC) hosts St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday where a win would secure the top-seed for the Sea Gulls. However, a loss and a Stevenson win would make the Mustangs the No. 1-seed for the second consecutive season.
Since 2007, Stevenson has posted a record of 25-4-2 in conference play while sharing or owning the CAC regular season title each year and winning the 2010 championship and advancing to the program's third NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
As for Wednesday, Eyler scored the game's lone goal in the 18th minute off an assist from sophomore and reigning CAC Offensive Player of the Week Amanda Marston (Baltimore/Institute of Notre Dame).
The goal was the third game-winner of the season for Eyler and the 15th of her career. She is now three goals shy of Jen Monaldi's school record of 63 and nine points shy of the career scoring record.
Wednesday's game featured two of the top three scorers in the CAC in Eyler and Salisbury's Amanda Miele as well as two of the top three goalies in Ross and the Sea Gulls' Michelle Conrad. While Eyler provided the offensive headline, senior Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna Park) highlighted a defensive effort by making four saves, including two on Meile, to earn her eighth shutout of the season and the 18th of her career.
The Mustangs took control of the game in the first half, outshooting the Sea Gulls, 8-2.
Salisbury made a rally in the second, but the Stevenson defense, led by Ross and junior and reigning CAC Defensive Player of the Week Taylor Zimmerman (Jarrettsville/John Carroll), managed to keep the Sea Gulls outbay, turning away all six second-half shots.
Conrad had three saves for Salisbury who is now 5-3-1 on the road this season, including 2-1 in neutral site contests.
The Mustangs wrap-up CAC regular season play on Saturday at Mary Washington before hosting its regular season finale next Tuesday versus Bridgewater (Va.) on Senior Day.
