Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer sophomore Marcus Green (Rosedale/Overlea) posted his first career multi-goal game, netting the game-winner in the 52nd minute as the Mustangs snapped their three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) Saturday at Seahawk Stadium.
Stevenson (5-5-1, 1-2 CAC) overcame a 17-8 deficit in shots, including a 9-2 margin in the first half, and the fact that it did take a single corner kick to avenge last season 3-2 overtime loss to the Seahawks in Owings Mills.
St. Mary's (Md.) posted the game's first four shots in the opening 10 minutes before the Mustangs' first attempt by Green was saved by Seahawk keeper Austin Brown in the 11th minute.
However, Green broke through with the game's first goal just six minutes later with the help of senior Ryan Brost (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) as he dribbled down the right side, beat his defender and then slipped a shot past Brown inside the far post.
The Seahawks would get the equalizer in the 36th minute when Brian Payne scored his first goal of the season on a scramble in front of the Mustang net.
Neither team managed a shot in the final nine minutes and the game was tied at the half, 1-1.
After turning away an opportunity for the Seahawks on a corner kick in the 49th minute, Stevenson would get the eventual game-winner less than three minutes later when Green netted his second goal of the game on a feed from freshman Andrew Garner (Owings/Northern) who, like Brost, picked up his team-leading second assist.
The goal proved to be the first game-winner of Green's career after the Stevenson defense turned away eight, second half shots by the Seahawk offense.
Senior Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) finished with two saves to earn his fifth win of the season and the 30th of his career.
Brown totaled three saves for the Seahawks (5-5, 1-2 CAC).
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts a non-conference contest with Rutgers-Camden beginning at 4:00 p.m.
