GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Despite holding a 26-5
advantage in shots, the Stevenson women's soccer team lost a
heartbreaker to Susquehanna Sunday in the Gettysburg Cup when the
Crusaders scored in the 84th minute and then denied the Mustangs a
chance to tie with a team save with just 15 seconds remaining.
Five out of the last six losses for Stevenson (1-2) over the
last two seasons have come by just one goal.
The Mustangs appeared to have taken a 1-0 lead in the 21st
minute on a strike by junior Stephanie Eyler
(Thurmont/Catoctin), but the linesman raised his flag for
offsides and it was waived off.
Undeterred, the Mustangs continued to pressure Susquehanna (1-1)
with quality chances, including seven corner kicks.
The Crusaders' Julie Briskey scored the game's only goal with
just under seven minutes remaining on double assists by
Marissa DeParto and Samantha Farina off a
corner kick before a freshman triumvirate from Stevenson looked for
the equalizer.
With 43 seconds left, freshman Danielle Pulliam
(Catonsville/Catonsville) forced Crusader keeper Rachel
Norbuts to punch save her shot over the goal line for a corner
kick. Freshman Catherine Madden
(Bethesda/Walter Johnson) sent the ball in with 25 seconds
remaining which eventually found freshman Mackenzie
Calhoun (Ellicott City/Howard) in front of an empty
net.
However, Susquehanna's Angela Amato came in behind Norbuts and
deflected Calhoun's shot away to preserve the victory.
Norbuts made 10 saves for the Crusaders in picking up the
shutout victory.
The Mustangs make their home debut this Thursday when they take
on local rival McDaniel at Caves Athletics Complex beginning at
4:00 p.m.
