OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson field hockey
junior Jorden Haney
(Elkridge/Long Reach) scored the game's only goal
with16:26 remaining in the first half and the senior Kara
Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) made the lead hold as the
Mustangs posted a 1-0 victory over Delaware Valley Saturday morning
in the Black-Eyed Susan Tournament.
With the win, the Mustangs (2-0) gave head coach Erika Blozie
her second in as many games as a head coach, marking the first time
in program history a head coach has begun her career with two
wins.
Coming into today, Haney had just two assists in 25 career
games, picking one each in 2008 and 2009. However, after sending in
the penalty corner in the game's 19th minute, she corralled the
loose ball in front of Aggie goalkeeper Hollis Hancock and slid it
underneath her her pads for her first career goal and the eventual
game-winner.
Stevenson stood its ground the remaining 51 minutes with
Zimmerman recording her seventh career by making seven saves.
Senior Christie Greer (Bel
Air/Bel Air) also chipped in with one defensive save as
the Mustang defense allowed just 12 shots, including five in the
second half.
For Delaware Valley (0-1), it held a 12-7 edge in shots and a
7-4 margin in penalty corners. Hancock faced eight shots in 70
minutes of action and made three saves.
Stevenson faces Neumann tomorrow at 2:00 p.m., on day two of the
Black Eyed Susan Tournament.
