ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The No. 12 Stevenson field hockey team earned its fifth straight shutout Tuesday evening, defeating Elizabethtown 4-0 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
The first quarter featured a back-and-forth battle, with Stevenson recording three shots while Elizabethtown registered five.
The Mustangs came out firing in the second quarter, opening the scoring at the 17:10 mark when Hailey Mertz found the back of the cage off an assist from Sydney Aylward. Just 20 seconds later, Kailen Hibshman doubled the Stevenson lead, converting off a penalty corner inserted by Lauren Schulz.
Stevenson continued to apply pressure as Shae Bennett added the Mustangs' third goal of the quarter off a feed from Aylward, giving Stevenson a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Aylward capped the scoring in the fourth quarter, finding the cage off an assist from Monica Druckemiller to secure the 4-0 victory.
Stevenson controlled play throughout the contest, outshooting Elizabethtown 18-8 overall and 13-2 on cage. Aylward led the Mustangs with four points, while Bennett, Hibshman and Mertz each recorded two points. Druckemiller and Schulz each added an assist.
Jordan Vradenburgh and Ollie Winterle split time in goal, combining for two saves to secure Stevenson's fifth consecutive shutout.
The Mustangs will remain on the road to face their first ranked opponent, No. 14 Ursinus, on Friday. The contest is set for 5 p.m. in Collegeville, Pa.
