OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's
soccer team avenged last year's loss to Catholic by scoring three
unanswered goals, including two from senior Heather Redding
(Street/North Harford) and the first collegiate goal from
freshman Shannon McGuire
(Darnestown/Northwest) en route to a 3-0 victory Wednesday
at Caves Athletics Complex.
The win was the fourth of the season for the Mustangs (4-4), all
of which have come by shutout, and the 38th for head coach Graeme
Millar surpassing former mentor Lynette Buffington for second
all-time in school history.
Stevenson's first head coach, Matt Biederman, holds the record
after totaling 62 from 1994 to 2000. However, Millar does hold the
edge with a .594 winning percentage.
Redding notched her second multi-goal performance of the season,
finding the back of the net for her first tally in the 26th minute
off an assist from junior Samantha Novy
(Severna Park/Severna Park).
Novy was able to draw Catholic netminder Amanda Cowan 15 yards
from her line before playing the ball across the face of the goal
to Redding who tapped in the game-winner from four yards.
Seven minutes later, McGuire scored her first collegiate goal on
a 25 yard blast from the far right wing into the upper left 90,
freezing everyone, to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
Redding and Novy also hooked up on the Mustangs' last goal in
the 75th minute after working a give-and-go at the top of the box
provide further insurance with Redding's second tally and a 3-0
advantage.
Sophomore Lauren Weitzman
(Westminster/Winters Mill) earned her first shutout of the
season and the third of her career. The defense limited the
Cardinals opportunities as Weitzman had to make just two saves on
13 shots.
The Mustangs travel to Elizabethtown on Saturday to face the
Blue Jays at 2:00 p.m. Last season, Elizabethtown took the Mustangs
to overtime before junior Stephanie Eyler
(Thurmont/Catoctin) scored her second goal of the game in
the 97th minute to give Stevenson a 2-1 win at home.
