OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Pierre Zibi's goal in the
102nd minute removed the Stevenson men's soccer team from the ranks
of the unbeaten on Saturday as St. Mary's (Md.) handed the Mustangs
a 3-2 double overtime loss at Caves Athletics Complex.
The Mustangs (6-1, 0-1 CAC) had gone unbeaten in their last four
overtime decisions dating back to a 3-2 loss to Goucher on Sept.
18, 2008.
St. Mary's (Md.) (2-4-1, 1-0 CAC) drew first blood in the 31st
minute with a header by Taylor Lewis on a helper from Justin Bowers
before reigning CAC and ECAC South Offensive Player of the Week,
sophomore Ansger Otto
(Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), struck four minutes later
receiving a lob from sophomore Rodrick Likonko
(Arlington, Va./Wakefield).
Otto added an unassisted tally seven minutes later as Stevenson
took a 2-1 lead into halftime. His two goals made him the nation's
leader in both points and goals across all three NCAA divisions,
surpassing Rob Santaniello of Ramapo, as he now has 25 points and
11 goals.
Nick Ibello putaway a rebound after a saved shot from Bowers to
knot the game at 2-2 in the 60th minute.
The game would remain scoreless for 42 minutes with neither team
on target until the game-winner by Zibi off an assist by Brian
Payne.
Junior Ryan Flannelly
(Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) had six saves on 24 shots
faced while Paul Spranklin finished with four for St.
Mary's (Md.).
The Mustangs return to action on Wednesday when they travel to
CAC rival York (Pa.) for a rematch of last season's CAC champioship
game. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
