OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the sixth time this
season, the Stevenson women's soccer team was involved in a
shutout. Unfortunately, the Mustangs were on the receiving end for
the third time, losing to No. 8 Johns Hopkins Wednesday, 2-0 at
Caves Athletics Complex.
After trading one shot each in the first six minutes, Johns
Hopkins (5-1) earned a corner kick in the 14th minute. Pamela
Vranis sent the ball right into the heart of the 6 where it found
the head of Sarah Gieszl who placed it beyond the outstretched
hands of Mustang junior Brittany Ross
(Millersville/Severna Park) into the upper 90 for her
first tally of the season and the early 1-0 lead.
But, Vranis and Hopkins were not done yet.
In the 24th minute, Vranis and Sara Tankard worked a give-and-go
at the top of the box. Vranis sidestepped three Mustang
defenders and fired a shot from 15 yards out to the far post to
provide an insurance goal and a two-goal advantage.
Both sides utilized two goalkeepers as the Blue Jays used
Meredith Maguire, who faced four shots and saved three in the first
half before giving way to Kristen Redsun who preserved the shutout
by making two saves on four shots.
Ross faced 11 shots, allowing two goals and making three saves
in the first half before sophomore Lauren Weitzman
(Westminster/Winters Mill) entered in the second half and
gave Stevenson a fighting chance, not allowing another Hopkins'
tally along with one save on six shots.
The Mustangs continue their three-game homestand on Saturday
against CAC rival St. Mary's (Md.) beginning at 12:00 p.m.
