YORK, Pa. - Stevenson women's soccer freshman
Mackenzie
Calhoun (Ellicott City/Howard) could not have picked a
more opportune time to score her first collegiate goal as she
scored just three minutes into overtime to give the Mustangs a 1-0
road victory over York (Pa.) Saturday in the CAC opener for both
teams.
Stevenson (3-2, 1-0 CAC) won their fourth-straight against the
Spartans after having lost five consecutive from 2002 to 2007.
Calhoun took a feed from junior Stephanie Eyler
(Thurmont/Catoctin) inside the 18 before slipping a shot
past York keeper Sarah Spanarkel for the golden goal.
The Spartans had many opportunities, holding a 20-5 advantage in
shots, but the Stevenson defense help keep the quality of chances
to a minimum, allowing only six shots on goal, five of which were
stopped by junior Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna
Park).
After an uneventful first half, things began to heat up for both
sides in the second as the Spartans (0-3-1, 0-1 CAC) strung a few
chances together in the first 15 minutes, but nothing was on
target.
Sophomore Kayla Curry
(Timonium/John Carroll) saved the game for Stevenson in
the 79th minute when she cleared a shot off the goal line by the
Spartans' Stephanie Rice following a corner kick in which York had
two prime chances to take the lead.
Ross earned her second shutout of the season and the 11th of her
career, totaling four of her five saves in the second half.
Stevenson returns home for a key cross-town contest against No.
8 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday in the first meeting between the two
schools since 2001. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
