BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Stevenson women's soccer
team held a 17-9 edge in shots, but Bridgewater (Va.) used goals in
the waning moments of each half and got six saves from Shauna
Manovich her earned her fifth career shutout with a 2-0 victory
Wednesday at Jopson Field in the season opener for both teams.
The Eagles (1-0) held the Mustangs scoreless for the
second-straight year following last year's 0-0 tie at Stevenson in
what was also the season opener for both teams.
After neither team was able to find the back of the net in the
first 42 minutes, Bridgewater managed to crack a 153 minute
scoreless streak in the series when Jacey Kelley scored unassisted
after her first shot was stopped by sophomore Lauren Weitzman
(Wetsminster/Winters Mill) and she punched in the rebound
at 42:18.
The Eagles' 1-0 lead would hold until the final three minutes
when Sara Taylor scored unassisted to seal the victory with her
ninth career goal in the 88th minute.
Manovich totaled three saves in each half and had to withstand a
second half effort from the Mustangs (0-1) in which they outshot
Bridgewater, 9-4. Stevenson also held a 9-2 advantage in shots,
including 5-1 in the second half.
Weitzman finished with three saves, but allowed a career-high
two goals in her 13th career start. Meanwhile, junior Brittany Ross
(Millersville/Severna Park), who boasts a 0.70 goals
against average and 17-3-3 record in 31 career appearances, made
her first career start in the field, totaling one shot on goal.
Recovering from injury, junior Stephanie Eyler
(Thurmont/Catoctin) extended her consecutive games streak
to 42, but missed her first start since Oct. 1, 2008 versus
Catholic, ending a streak of 29-straight starts.
Stevenson travels to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania this weekend for
the Gettysburg Cup. The Mustangs will face Ramapo on Saturday at
4:00 p.m.
