OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Reigning CAC and ECAC
Rookie of the Year Ansger Otto
(Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) showed no signs of a
sophomore slump, scoring two book end goals in a 3-0 season opening
victory over Bridgewater (Va.) Wednesday at the Caves Athletic
Complex.
Otto, who led the team with nine goals on 22 points a year ago,
totaled his third career multi-goal game.
Stevenson (1-0) dominated the game on all fronts, holding a 26-9
edge in shots, including a 14-0 margin in the first half. The
Mustangs also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks in the half and
a 6-1 margin for the game.
The Stevenson defense also didn't allow a shot on goal in the
game's first 54 minutes.
Otto began his season on a high note 17 minutes in when he went
1 v 3 and dissected the Eagles' defense with surgical precision,
finishing off a shot just beyond the outstretched hands of Eagle
keeper Travis Morris in the lower right corner to give the Mustangs
a 1-0 lead.
Off a throw-in in the 41st minute, freshman Marcus Green
(Rosedale/Overlea) found the feet of freshman Josh Stover
(West Friendship/Marriotts Ridge) just outside the 18 who
dribbled left and fired from 14 yards to make it 2-0.
In the 65 minute, junior John Adamo (Glassboro,
N.J./Washington Township) executed a perfect lob pass from
midfield that fell opportunistically at the boot of Otto whose
second goal proved to be insurance and a 3-0 lead.
Stevenson utilized a trio of goalkeepers today to secure the
shared shutout. Junior Ryan Flannelly
(Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) earned the start and recorded
one save while facing three shots over the first 65 minutes of the
game. Sophomore Cory Spindler
(Sykesville/Century) replaced Flannelly and saw just four
shots before freshman Alex Zeidler
(Woodstown, N.J./Woodstown) faced two shots in the final
six minutes.
Morris played the full 90 minutes for Bridgewater (0-1),
recording eight saves.
Stevenson travels to Williamsport, Pennsylvania this weekend for
the Lycoming Kickoff Classic where it will open against SUNY
Cortland Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
