GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Gettysburg rallied from a 3-1
deficit with a pair of three-run innings in the sixth and seventh
while a pair of Bullet pitchers held Stevenson scoreless over the
final four innings as they rallied for a 7-3 victory over the
Mustangs in non-conference action Tuesday at Kirchhoff Field.
The loss was the third-straight for Stevenson (17-16) who was
held to three runs or less for the 14th time in 33 games this
season and the ninth time in its last 16.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead just five batters into the
game against Gettysburg ace Ryan Taylor when junior Brandon
Krochune (Baltimore/Digital Harbor) hit a two-out
single up the middle after Taylor retired the first two batters on
strikeouts.
The Bullets (14-17) got a run back on an RBI single by Craig
Barrows in the second before Stevenson pushed its lead back to two
on a two-out single by junior Jeff Bihy
(Baltimore/Eastern Tech) in the top of the fifth.
Meanwhile, Mustang freshman James Castellano
(Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) limit Gettysburg to just
five hits and five base runners through five innings after retiring
15 of the first 20 batters he faced.
However, the Bullets broke through in the bottom of the sixth,
scoring three unearned runs to take their first lead, 4-3.
After leadoff singles by Mike Backus and Pat Cody, Castellano
managed to get the first two outs before consecutive throwing
errors allowed both Backus and Cody to score to tie the game.
Gettysburg then took the lead for good on on RBI double to left
center by Drew Roy.
The Bullets added three more runs in the sixth, including two on
a home run by Matt Karis off of Stevenson junior Josh Brundige
(Brookeville/East Jessamine).
Krochune finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Bihy went 2-for-4
with one run driven in as the two combined for four of the
Mustangs' seven hits. Castellano allowed just three earned runs and
nine hits over 6.2 innings while striking out three, but suffered
his third loss of the season.
Karis was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Gettysburg while Backus,
Barrows and Chris Simard also had two hits apiece.
The Mustangs return to action on Thursday at Shenandoah. First
pitch is at 6:00 p.m.
