FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - For the third-straight
game, Stevenson and Mary Washington needed extra innings to decide
a key CAC contest, but unlike Wednesday, the Mustangs came out on
top Saturday, winning game one 5-4 in nine innings before taking
game two, 6-5 in 10.
The sweep puts Stevenson (16-13, 10-8 CAC) one game behind the
Eagles for fourth place in the CAC standings with Mary Washington
traveling to No. 6 Salisbury on Sunday.
If the Eagles drop both games, the Mustangs will earn the
fourth-seed in the first round of the CAC Baseball Championship
next Tuesday, April 13.
In three meetings this season, Stevenson and Mary Washington
played a total of 29 innings, six more than scheduled after the
Eagles won Wednesday's meeting 4-3 in 10 innings.
Sophomore Patrick Quinn (Mt.
Airy/Linganore) played a role in both victories on
Saturday, running his record to 3-1 in the opener before picking up
his CAC-leading fifth save in game two.
Meanwhile, sophomore Justin Anderson
(Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) went 4-for-9 and was the
lone Mustang to total more than one hit in both games as he was
2-for-5 with one RBI in game one and 2-for-4 in the second.
Trailing 5-4 with two outs in the top of the seventh of game
two, senior Ryan Baione
(Waldorf/Westlake) singled to left before scoring on an
RBI-single by Anderson to force extra innings.
Anderson, who reached on an error, would then score the
game-winning run, unearned, on a single to center by Johnson.
Stevenson took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first after Tarlow
scored on a wild pitch and Krochune and junior Jeff Bihy
(Baltimore/Eastern Tech) each had RBIs.
Mary Washington took the lead with a four-run fourth,
highlighted by a two-run homer by Will Wright, before the Mustangs
tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Tarlow.
The Eagles then answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth
as Jackson Clement, who led off the inning with a triple, scored on
a sacrifice fly by Eric Rehbein.
Stevenson led 2-0 in the first inning of game one after a
two-run single by junior Brandon Krochune
(Baltimore/Digital Harbor) and increased its lead to 4-0
in the third on RBIs from junior Dustin Tarlow
(Finksburg/Westminster) and senior George Papuchis
(Damascus/Good Counsel).
However, Mary Washington (18-8, 10-6 CAC) tied the game with two
runs in the third and two in the sixth to force extra innings.
With the game tied at 4-4, Krochune led off the top of the ninth
with a walk before senior Derrick Nason
(Catonsville/Reservoir) entered as a pinch runner and was
sacrificed to second by freshman Heath Johnson (New
Castle, Del./Charter School of Wilmington).
Senior Dan Leonard
(Cambridge/South Dorchester) then singled to center before
freshman Cody Schuchman
(Baltimore/Calvert Hall) drove in Nason for the go-ahead
run with a sacrifice fly to center.
In the bottom of the ninth, Quinn retired the Eagles in order to
pick up his third win. In 2.1 innings, he did not allow a hit or
earned run.
The next game for Stevenson will be on Tuesday in the first
round of the CAC Baseball Championship. The site and opponent for
the Mustangs will be determined following Sunday's CAC doubleheader
between Salisbury and Mary Washington.
