ABERDEEN, Md. - For the second time in the last
five games, the Stevenson baseball team won in walk-off fashion
when senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf/Westlake) hit a
two-run single down the left field line with one out in the bottom
of the ninth to give the Mustangs a 5-4 win over local rival
McDaniel Monday at Yankee Stadium Field.
The win was the fifth-straight for Stevenson (7-1) who is off to
the best start under eighth-year head coach Jason Tawney.
On Saturday, junior Steve Krider
(Westminster/Westminster) hit a walk-off RBI single in the
bottom of the seventh to give the Mustangs a 2-1 win over St.
Mary's (Md.).
Krider also played a role in Monday's rally as he singled to
lead off the bottom of the ninth after entering the game to pitch
in the top half. After a defensive switch moved senior
George Papuchis (Damascus/Good Counsel) from
designated hitter to catcher, Krider moved into the eighth spot in
the order.
Freshman Brad Blum (Olney/Magruder) entered as
a pinch runner for Krider before advancing into scoring position on
an error by the shortstop off a bunt by freshman Heath
Johnson (New Castle, Del./Charter School of Wilmington).
Sophomore Joe Robak (Baltimore/Calvert Hall)
then moved Blum and Johnson to second and third with one out
following a ground out to the pitcher, setting the stage for
Baione's heroics.
Baione finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs while junior
Jeff Bihy (Baltimore/Eastern Tech) also picked up
his eighth RBI of the season.
Krider picked up his first win of the season after he and
freshman Andrew Haab (Glen Burnie/Old Mill)
entered the game in relief of sophomore starter Tyler
Anzmann (Westminster/Westminster) who struck out six and
allowed just two hits over four-and-two-thirds innings.
The Mustangs rallied from a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the
seventh to tie the game at 3-3 before the Green Terror (0-1) scored
one in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Russell Coover to
regain the lead, 4-3.
Robak had an RBI ground out in the seventh before senior
Derrick Nason (Catonsville/Resevoir) scored to tie
the game on a passed ball.
Coover was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for McDaniel while Sergio Nieto
was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Stevenson hosts a CAC doubleheader with Wesley on Tuesday
