WASHINGTON, D.C. - Stevenson baseball junior
Jeff Bihy (Baltimore/Eastern Tech) totaled six
hits, three doubles and four RBIs to lead an offensive output
that totaled 22 runs and 31 hits in sweeping a non-conference
doubleheader against Catholic Sunday, 12-3 and 10-4 at Gallaudet's
Bison Field.
Included in the offensive explosion by the Mustangs (6-1) was 15
extra-base hits, including 12 doubles and three home runs.
Senior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good Counsel)
homered in each game while also adding a double, four runs and four
RBIs. He totaled a 1.429 slugging percentage and added two walks.
Senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf/Westlake) went
3-for-5 with a double, two-run homer and four RBIs in game one as
the Mustangs scored at least one run in five of their seven
offensive innings.
After sophomore Joe Robak (Baltimore/Calvert
Hall) led off the first game with a double, Baione hit a
two-run homer to left before his RBI single in the second gave
Stevenson a 3-1 lead.
Stevenson added three more runs in the third, highlighted by a
two-run single from junior Chris Maienshein
(Finksburg/Westminster), and led 6-2 after three.
Junior Steve Krider (Westminster/Westminster)
drove in two runs with a single in the sixth before Papuchis hit a
solo home run to highlight a four-run seventh.
Bihy was 4-for-5 with one RBI while Robak, Baione and Maienshein
each had three hits.
Not to be overlooked among all the offense in the first game was
a strong pitching performance from sophomore D.J. Milliken
(Owings/Northern). He scattered seven hits over seven
innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out four.
In game two, Stevenson fell behind 2-0 after three
innings and 4-1 following four.
However, the Mustangs totaled nine runs over the final
three innings while holding the Cardinals (3-2) scoreless in
winning their fourth-straight.
The key to the rally came in the form of a six-run fifth where
Stevenson had six hits, including three doubles. After Robak hit a
two-run single, he tied the game at 4-4 when he scored on an RBI
ground out by sophomore Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury,
Pa./Calvert Hall).
Junior Brandon Krochune (Baltimore/Digital
Harbor) then gave the Mustangs the lead for good with an
RBI double that scored Baione before Bihy drove in Krochune and
Papuchis with a double to center to give Stevenson a 7-4 advantage.
Papuchis capped the nine unanswered run rally with a three-run
homer to left in the sixth.
Bihy also finished the game with three RBIs after going 2-for-3
while Robak was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Freshman Josh Cook
(Gaithersburg/Covenant Life) totaled the first two hits of
his career, going 2-for-2, while freshman Heath Johnson
(New Castle, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) had his
first career multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4.
Junior John Jackson (Baltimore/Cardinal
Gibbons) earned his first victory since 2008 and
senior Brian Spinazzola (Baltimore/Boys'
Latin) picked up his third career save.
Stevenson looks to make its home debut on Monday when it hosts
local rival McDaniel at the new Yankee Stadium field at Ripken
Baseball Academy in Aberdeen.
