ABERDEEN, Md. - No. 6 Salisbury scored six
runs over the first three innings and
Stevenson rallid back with six runs over the final two,
but Chad Wolfe retiring the final two batters with the tying run at
the plate to earn the save as the Sea Gulls escaped with a 9-7
victory Wednesday at Yankee Stadium Field.
With the win, Salisbury (14-2, 8-0 CAC) remained unbeaten in the
CAC and increased its lead atop the conference standings to three
games over Wesley.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs (12-5, 6-5 CAC) fell to fourth,
half-a-game behind Wesley who owns the tiebreaker with Stevenson
after winning two of three against the Mustangs this season.
In addition to earning the save, Wolfe also went 2-for-3 at the
plate with a double and two RBIs. His two-run double in the first
helped give the Sea Gulls a 3-0 lead before a two-run double by
Bill Morton pushed the lead to 6-1 after three.
Salisbury increased its lead to 9-1 on a two-run
single by Brian Green in the seventh and an RBI ground out by Tim
Kellinger in the eighth.
However, Stevenson began its comeback with a five-run, six-hit
eighth inning that included RBIs from four different players.
Senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf/Westlake) started
the rally with an RBI double that scored junior Chris
Maienshein (Finksburg/Westminster) who led off the inning
with a triple to left.
Senior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good Counsel)
then scored Baione with a single to center as the Mustangs
loaded the bases with one out. Senior Dan Leonard
(Cambridge/South Dorchester) drove in Papuchis
before junior Jeff Bihy (Baltimore/Eastern
Tech) scored on a passes ball and junior Brandon
Krochune (Baltimore/Digital Harbor) scored on a sacrifice
fly by junior Dustin Tarlow
(Finksburg/Westminster).
Baione hit a one-out double in the ninth before scoring on a
single by sophomore Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury,
Pa./Calvert Hall) to pull Stevenson within two.
Wolfe then entered in relief of Justin Sousa and retired the two
batters he faced to protect the two-run lead and earn
his second save.
Baione went 3-for-5 with one RBI while Maienshein and Bihy were
each 2-for-5. Papuchis was 1-for-5 with two RBIs.
Senior Derrick Nason (Catonsville/Reservoir)
suffered his second loss after surrendering six runs on eight
hits in six innings despite outdueling Dustin Herbert
who ran his record to 5-0 after allowing six runs on 10 hits
over seven-and-a-third innings.
Stevenson hosts a non-conference, nine-inning contest agaisnt
Ithaca on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m., before wrapping up its
three-game series with the Sea Gulls on the road Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Sea Gulls will be back in action on Friday
when they host a CAC doubleheader versus Mary
Washington at 2:00 p.m., before welcoming the Mustangs for
their fifth conference game in just four days.
