SALISBURY, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer
senior Allison
Humphries (Bel Air/John Carroll) scored the game's
lone goal just 2:04 into the first overtime to lead the Mustangs to
their first win in 15 career meetings against Salisbury, 1-0
Saturday at the SU Soccer Complex.
While it was the first win in the series between the two schools
for Stevenson (8-5, 4-1 CAC), it improved the Mustangs' record to
1-2-1 since they joined the CAC prior to the 2007 season.
The victory also moved Stevenson into a three-way tie for first
place in the CAC with St. Mary's (Md.) and Frostburg State after
the Seahawks posted a 2-0 victory over York (Pa.) at home
Saturday.
The Seahawks hold the tiebreaker over Stevenson by virtue of its
2-0 road win on September 18 and the Mustangs host Frostburg State
on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., before St. Mary's (Md.) travels to the
Bobcats next Saturday.
Salisbury (5-8, 3-2 CAC) had outscored the Mustangs 40-3 in 11
meetings from 1994 to 2006, but since 2007, have only posted a
margin of 2-1 with the team's battling to a scoreless tie in
2008.
For Humphries, it was her fourth career game-winning goal and
lucky No. 13 as she found the back of the net from 30 yards out in
the 93rd minute. It was also her first goal since she scored two in
a 4-0 win over McDaniel earlier this year on September 9.
The game-winner came on the first shot of overtime and seventh
of the game for Stevenson who was outshot, 14-7.
However, the Mustangs kept the Sea Gulls scoreless thanks to the
play of junior Brittany Ross
(Millersville/Severna Park) and sophomore Lauren Weitzman
(Westminster/Winters Mill) who combined for eight saves
and their fifth shutout of the season.
After Ross got the start and made two first half saves, Weitzman
came up big in the second by stopping six of the eight shots she
faced as Salisbury held an 8-2 advantage in shots.
