Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer sophomore Ryan Pierce (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) scored the clinching goal in the shootout while sophomore Cory Spindler (Sykesville/Century) made back-to-back stops on the final two attempts for Marymount (Va.) as the Mustangs advanced to the semifinals of the CAC Men's Soccer Championship for the second-straight season.
The Mustangs (11-5-2) remained unbeaten in their last six at home, posting a 4-0-2 record. Both of those ties came against Marymount (Va.), including a 1-1 draw today and a 2-2 tie back on October 12.
Both teams scored goals in the game's first 30 minutes on nine shots before neither team could find the back of the net on 17 shots in the final 80 minutes of regulation and overtime.
Carlos Salinas scored the game's first goal just 2:20 in on a blast from the top of the box for his second goal of the season.
Stevenson would answer in the 30th minute when senior Tyler King (Parkville/Calvert Hall) netted a goal in his third consecutive game and his fifth of the season off an assist from senior Sean Scarselletta (Severna Park/Severna Park).
The Mustangs held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the opening half, but William Brahmstedt had three saves to keep the game tied at the half.
Both teams had six shots in a heated second half in which there were 12 fouls and five yellow cards with Brahmstedt adding two more saves and junior Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) adding one.
After two scoreless overtime periods in which Stevenson registered two shots, both teams scored on their first three attempts in the shootout. On the fourth attempt of the first round, senior Matthew Liska (Perry Hall/Archbishop Curley) was stopped by Brahmstedt, opening the door for the Saints.
However, Spindler came up with consecutive stops on Salinas and Mamadou Deme while Pierce scored on the Mustangs' final attempt to send Stevenson to the semifinals.
As a result, the Mustangs will travel to No. 25 Salisbury for a rematch with the Sea Gulls on Wednesday, November 3. Game time has yet to be determined.
Stevenson, who upset then-No. 17 Salisbury at home on October 6, 2-1 on a goal by Otto in the 88th minute, also beat the Sea Gulls on the road in the semifinals a year ago, 1-0.
