Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the second time in as many days, the Stevenson women's volleyball took an opponent to five sets, rallying from a 2-1 deficit, but on Wednesday night, the Mustangs were hampered by a season-high 38 attack errors as St. Mary's (Md.) escaped with a 24-26, 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 15-6 victory at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
After winning its first eight games in the new gymnasium, Stevenson (23-7, 3-5 CAC) suffered its second-straight loss at home and with it, settled for the sixth seed in next week's CAC Volleyball Championship.
As a result, the Mustangs will travel to third-seeded Salisbury in the first round on Tuesday, November 2.
Meanwhile, the Seahawks (20-7, 5-3 CAC) earned the fourth seed and a home game versus fifth-seeded York (Pa.) in the first round.
On a night when Stevenson led its Dig Pink campaign to raise money for breast cancer research, the 956 raucous fans were treated to a thrilling CAC contest.
The Mustangs edged out a two-point victory in the first set before St. Mary'sscored the final 11 points of the second set and rode the momentum to an 11-point win in the third.
The fourth set featured 11 ties and six lead changes, the last coming at 22-21 when a kill by Stevenson junior Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) sparked a 4-1 run and a Mustang victory.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the final set, clinching the victory by taking advantage of eight Stevenson attack errors.
After totaling 13 kills and a .216 hitting percentage in the first set, the Mustangs totaled 33 attack errors and just 36 kills over the final four for a an .024 percentage.
Sophomore Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) led Stevenson with 12 kills and 17 digs, both team-highs, as she was one of three players at least 10 kills and 10 digs.
Freshman Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) and senior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) each had 11 kills while junior Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) and freshman Samantha Shetterly (Elkridge/Mount de Sales) each had 11 digs.
Carney also had four kills and four service aces while freshman Stacey Rex (Finksburg/Westminster) had seven kills and six digs.
Michelle Klima led St. Mary's with 12 kills and Claire Kodan had 11. Kodan also had 12 digs and Katie Obal added 40 assists, eight of the Seahawks' 10 service aces, and seven digs.
The Mustangs travel to Gallaudet on Friday for a tri-match with the Bison and Rowan.
