Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the second-straight
year, Mary Washington needed overtime to escape a near upset on the
road at the hands of the Stevenson field hockey team as Caitlin
Baker scored her eighth goal of the season just 3:11 into the extra
period to give the Eagles a 2-1 victory Wednesday at Caves
Athletics Complex.
Last season, the Mustangs (7-10, 2-5 CAC) rallied from a
two-goal deficit to take a 3-2 lead before Mary Washington scored
the game's final two goals, including the game-winner 3:03 into the
first overtime en route to a 4-3 victory on the same field.
With the win, the Eagles (10-6, 5-1 CAC) move into a tie for
second place in the CAC standings with St. Mary's (Md.) who they
play at home on Saturday.
Mary Washingon held a 16-9 advantage in shots, including a 12-2
margin in the first half and overtime which is where the Eagles
scored both of their goals.
Erin Duffy scored off an assist from Morgan Jones less than 10
minutes for her third goal of the season to give the visitors and
early 1-0 lead.
Mary Washington maintained its one-goal advantage into the
second half until junior Jorden Haney
(Elkridge/Long Reach) netted her fourth of the year and
second in as many games with 20:02 remaining to tie the game at
1-1.
Junior Brittany Martin
(Hampstead/Hereford) picked up her team-leading sixth
assist on the play as her shot from the top of the circle was
redirected by Haney.
Stevenson managed to stay close thanks to senior Kara
Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) who had eight saves, including
five in the first half where the Mustangs were outshot 9-2. Senior
Natalie
DiPaolo (Baltimore/Perry Hall) also had a defensive
save and now has 32 for her career, only two shy of the school
record.
Stevenson, which is assured of its third consecutive appearance
in the CAC Field Hockey Championship, hosts a non-conference
contest with Richard Stockton on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
