LANGHORNE, Pa. - For the second consecutive
season, Stevenson traveled to Philadelphia Biblical and won
three-straight matches while defeating the hosts in the
championship match, en route to the capturing the Crimson Eagle
Classic title.
On Saturday, the Mustangs (4-1) posted back-to-back 3-0
victories over Farmingdale and Lancaster Bible before rallying from
a 2-0 deficit to knock off Philadelphia Biblical 22-25, 27-29,
25-22, 25-20, 16-14.
A year ago, Stevenson posted three consecutive sweeps against
Ramapo, Cedar Crest and Philadelphia Biblical.
For their efforts, sophomore Amy Rudolph (North
East/Rising Sun) and freshman Avery Gabbard
(Arnold/Broadneck) were both named to the all-tournament
team.
In the championship match, Gabbard totaled her first career
double double with 10 kills and 14 digs as she was one of four
players with at least 10 digs and one of three with 10 kills.
Junior Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott
Key) totaled a game-high 16 kills, two shy of her
career-high while junior Alex Mercer
(Eldersburg/Liberty) added 12. Katsampis also had eight
digs and Mercer contributed seven total kills.
Defensively, sophomore Alexa Carner
(Towson/Towson) had a game-high 20 digs while Rudolph and
sophomore Brooke Gilley (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright)
each had 10. Rudolph also had 39 assists.
After 16 kills and 10 errors in the first two sets, Stevenson
totaled 32 kills and only 10 errors over the final three while
posting a .272 hitting percentage.
Carly Plank and Rachel Calderon led
the Crimson Eagles (2-2) with 17 and 15 kills,
respectively. Calderon and Kay Lynn Zeiset each had 12 digs.
The Mustangs return to action on Thursday at Goucher. Game time
is at 7:00 p.m.
