WINCHESTER, Va. - Stevenson men's soccer
freshman Roderick Linkonko (Arlington,
Va./Wakefield) and sophomore Chris Sokolis (Perry
Hall/Perry Hall) each picked up their first points of the
season, but Shenandoah scored a season-high three goals en route to
a 3-1 victory Sunday evening at Shentel Stadium.
The loss was the third in four road games this season for the
Mustangs (5-5) whose five wins are the most to start a season after
10 games since 2006 when they were 6-4. That year, the team
finished 11-7.
For the first time in the last five games, Stevenson was not the
first team to score as Adam Aldinger gave the Hornets (2-5-2) a 1-0
lead only three minutes into the game off an assist from Kevin
Schaeffer at 3:20.
However, the Mustangs would tie the game just 1:23 later when
Linkonko scored his first career goal of an assist from Sokolis who
picked up his first point since a 4-3 win over Shenandoah a year
ago on Sept. 20, 2008. He finished his first season with four
points on two goals.
Aldinger would later pick up his second goal of the game in the
19th minute to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead which they would take
into halftime.
After Shenandoah held a 7-3 edge in shots and a 4-1 margin in
corner kicks in the first half, Stevenson would hold the advantage
in the second half, but couldn't get the tying goal as Arman
Bozorgmanesh totaled three of his four saves to protect the
lead.
Kyle Farrell would then add an insurance goal in the 68th minute
to cap the scoring for the Hornets who have now gone unbeaten in
three of their last four after starting the season 0-4-1.
Sophomore Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex,
N.J./Middlesex) finished with five saves for the Mustangs.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, hosting a CAC contest
with Mary Washington at Caves Athletics Complex beginning at 4:00
p.m.
