OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's soccer
sophomore Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin)
posted her seventh career multi-goal game, including first this
season, as she scored both goals of a 2-1 overtime victory over
Elizabethtown Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Mustangs
(5-3-1) who were ranked ninth in this week's NSCAA Division III
South Atlantic Region Poll.
It was the second-straight one-goal decision between the two
teams after the Blue Jays (2-5) won last year's meeting 1-0 on
Sept. 27, 2008.
Stevenson is unbeaten in six of its nine games this season which
is just off of last year's start in which the team was unbeaten in
seven of its first nine en route to an appearance in the ECAC
Division III South Region Championship.
The Mustangs are also unbeaten in four out of five games at home
this season, but had to withstand a determined Blue Jay team who
held an 18-8 advantage in shots.
Eyler gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead just five minutes in when she
scored off an assist from senior Katie Decker (White
Hall/Hereford) on Stevenson's second shot of the game.
Neither team would find the net again until the 65th minute when
Kelly Fisher scored her first of the season after Stevenson
freshman keeper Lauren Wietzman (Westminster/Winters
Mill) had the ball jarred loose when she collided with an
Elizabethtown attacker in mid-air.
However, the goal would be the only one of the half allowed by
Weitzman who made three second half saves despite facing 11 Blue
Jay shots. Two of the shots came in the final six minutes where she
totaled two of her saves.
Eyler would then score her eighth career game-winner and second
this season on the first shot of overtime with 3:33 remaining.
Weitzman finished with six saves and is unbeaten in four of her
six decisions this season. Kristen Kelly made four saves for
Elizabethtown.
Stevenson plays its second consecutive non-conference contest on
Wednesday when it travels to Juniata. Game time is at 4:00 p.m. The
Mustangs won last year's game 2-0 at home on Sept. 24, 2008.
